I hear Christians all the time speaking of a war between heaven and hell, if this is true does God have limitations of power? Man only conducts wars because of our limitations of power and foresight. God has both all-power and all-knowledge, therefore, no reason for war.
When Christians speak about a war between heaven and hell, they are, most likely, speaking of “spiritual†warfare between good and evil. This does not mean that God is limited in His power. God has allowed humanity “free will†and, therefore, evil came into existence (Genesis 3:1-6). God oversees the existence of evil, but, in His sovereign wisdom, He allows it to exist in the world (Romans 11:33-36). The Bible describes “war†in two ways: 1) “spiritual†warfare (Ephesians 6:11-12) and 2) “earthly†warfare (Matthew 24:6). “Spiritual†warfare is the battle between good and evil, between God and Satan, angels and demons, and even between humans and demons. “Earthly†warfare is the battle between humans and takes the form of conventional warfare. Actually, God oversees each of these aspects of warfare and nothing happens outside of His control. Indeed, this supports the fact the God is “all powerful†and uses peace, as well as war, to display His sovereign superintending of human history (Proverbs 21:1, Isaiah 14:26-27, Revelation 17:17). In Scripture, the Lord is called “a man of war†(Exodus 15:3) as well as the “Prince of Peace†(Isaiah 9:6), both being true at the same time, because He is in control of all things.
So, war is not simply a product of man because of his limitations of power and foresight, but, in a real sense, war has been allowed by God to display His power and foresight as He rules and reigns over human history. God has used war to discipline His people, the Jews. (2 Kings 21:14-15) God has used war to punish unbelievers. (Joshua 10:19, 25) God also brings wars to an end, which also exalts Him. (Psalm 46:9-10) God, in the Person of Jesus Christ, will one day in the future use “war†to “end all wars†( Revelation 19:11). Then peace will reign on earth for a time and, eventually, for eternity (Revelation 20:1-3 and Revelation 21:1-5, 22:3).
May the Lord bless you as you search the Scriptures for the truth of God. May you know that, in the midst of war, you can have “spiritual peace†through personal faith in Jesus Christ. Please take to heart Romans 5:1, “Therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.†To receive Christ as your Savior, please read and believe other verses in the book of Romans, such as Romans 3:23, 5:8, 6:23, 8:1, 10:9-10.
